environmental voter tool

Environmental Action members are collaborating to create an organic, growing list of local environmental questions on the ballot in every city and town in America.

Browse the list using the links below and to your right — or add your own idea by logging in and telling us what issues you’re voting on this November that impact the planet.

Most important, you get a vote. Use your 10 stars to tell us which ideas are most important to you and the planet — and tell your friends to vote too. The top 3 ideas you select will get money, endorsements and support from hundreds of thousands of us this October

Voters in my state should know about:

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

Enter your idea and we'll search to see if someone has already suggested it.

If a similar idea already exists, you can support and comment on it.

If it doesn't exist, you can post your idea so others can support it.

    • Ban Fracking in Longmont

Longmont CO proposes to be the first city in America to Ban fracking.

Voters in Boulder and Weld counties will have a chance this fall to vote on a charter amendment, the Longmont Public Health, Safety and Wellness Act, which would place a ban on the controversial oil and gas extraction process known as hydraulic fracturing or fracking.

Over 8,000 signatures were submitted to the Longmont city clerk this summer in order to qualify the measure, almost double the number required.

Here's what Michael Bellmont, a member of Our Longmont, the group that gathered the signatures, said about the need…

      • MI Energy MI Jobs -- require 25 percent of our energy to come from local, renewable sources by 2025

A proposal on the Nov. 6, 2012, ballot requiring that 25 percent of Michigan’s energy come from renewable sources such as wind, solar and biomass by 2025.

Michigan currently imports its energy from other states and countries

Local renewable energy projects, by definition, employ local workers and keep dollars circulating in the local economy.

Studies by independent economists predict that implementing this proposal would cost the average Michigan household an average of $1.25 a month, and in the long run could reduce energy bills.

More than 30 states, including Illinois, Minnesota and Iowa, already have adopted renewable energy standards similar…

        • Ban Fracking in NY

Ban Fracking in the state of NY. It is the climate change's ultimate problem. The Governor is in office to protect the constituency, not to make there land, water and air toxic and use the last water we have. We have to honor mother earth for the next 7 generations as a starter.

There is too much proof that fracking is too toxic. That is what the Insurance companies and Mortgage banks say as well. The people and animals get very sick and so many have died in the fracking states.

          We must BAN fracking.

            • Let the People Make the Laws

Government is for sale to the highest bidder. It does not represent the people. Swiss, Scandinavian and in more Latin countries, the people rule by voter initiative and referendums. Laws have to be approved by all, and people can make the laws. Direct democracy has led to the best government. Representative government is rigged to be a dictatorship where money and/or power rule. In America, 500 politicians can be bribed, but not 300 million people using modern technology and proper security for making laws. One constitutional amendment can restore real democracy: http://ni4d.us/en/amendment

              • Ban Gillnet Fishing in the lower Columbia River

A "Yes" vote prohibits commercial salmon fishing with gillnets by non-tribal Oregon fishers, except in specifically designated off-channel areas located in the lower Columbia River.

Currently commercial fishers may catch salmon in Columbia River with gillnets - which efficiently hook the fish by their gills causing them to die of suffocation. It's a cruel and unnecessary fishing practice that kills more Salmon at an unsustainable pace.

This measure will prohibit commercial gillnet fishing except in specifically designated areas outside mainstream of lower Columbia River -- ensuring that traditional and tribal fishing continues, while preserving the wild river for millions more…

                • Alabama Forever Wild

The Alabama Forever Wild Land Trust Amendment, also known as Amendment 1, will appear on the November 6, 2012 ballot.

The measure would extend payments made to the Forever Wild Land Trust for a 20-year period in order to protect open space and the wildlife that thrives in it.

Since its creation, the Forever Wild Land Trust has purchased lands for recreational uses, nature preserves, additions to Wildlife Management Areas and state parks from coastal wetlands to mountain tops.

                  • I would like plastic bags banned in every city and town

I would like plastic bags banned in every city and town. I don't think it is right that each town has to petition for them to be banned. It should be a given fact that they are polluting our oceans, rivers, creeks, and landfills.

                    • What to do when hydrofracking has destroyed the water, air and land of a community.

Many communities in which hydrofracking has been going on have seen the quality of their water, air, and land totally degraded. The gas and oil companies should buy out, at a fair market value, these communities so that the residents of each community can begin a new life in a healthty environment. Then, on the degraded and uninhabitable land, gas companies should finance and erect wind and solar farms. Thus, formerly uninhabitable areas could become the energy hub for clean energy. This would be the silver lining of hydrofracking which would otherwise leave industrial wastelands wherever they have extracted natural…

Illinois has a quite a few nuclear power plants. We need more green energy. We should see about switching some of those power plants for wind farms.

                        • I think we should have mandatory recycling in all areas in all states.

Mandatory recycling would stop the build-up in land fills.

Cover shopping mall parking lots with solar panels - more clean energy harnessed from the sun and no more baking when you enter your car, therefore people would not hesitate as much to go shopping and business would improve. The economy would pick up. Cameras can be mounted on the poles holding the panels in order to prevent theft.

                                  • Keep the Ban on Uranium Mining and Milling in VA

This Winter when the General Assembly reconvenes, we are expecting a bill to be introduced to overturn the moratorium put on uranium mining over thirty years ago. Last year the Governor commissioned a Uranium Work Group to gather information needed to form a framework for regulation in anticipation of having the ban overturned.

                                        • International laws should be put in place to protect the Artic and the Antartic to prevent settlements and development of those regions

With the new routes being opened by the melting of the ice, traffic from boats and development will dramatically increase and pollute those regions.
